1. Internal Corner Grouting
A common grouting issue Grouted come across is that internal floor and wall corners (where two tiles meet at an inner corner) is grouted rather than siliconed.
It is usual for structural movement in the home. For this reason, industry standards and the Grouted process is to apply silicone to all inner corners.
Silicone (or polysiloxane) is a rubber-like substance. Silicones that Grouted use in our Grouted process act as both an adhesive and a sealant. The nature of silicone products allows for movement within the internal corners of a shower and are a crucial step in the waterproofing process.
2. Poor Cement Rendering
In a brick home – cement rendering is the surface that goes over the bricks to create a smooth level surface. The cement render in the shower and other wet areas are waterproofed, typically with a Polyurethane product before tiling commences.
To lay straight tiles and avoid moment in tiles, Grouted requires a level rendered surface, and the render must be completely stuck to the brick wall.
Were render is not stuck to the brick, hollow pockets between the cement render and the brick wall exist. This can typically lead to movement and cracking in the cement and waterproof membrane, tiles, and grout. As the movement occurs, water can seep into the hollow area between the cement render, wall, and brick cavity.
The other reason for a level rendered surface is to ensure the Grouted tiler has a level work surface to lay tiles straight with even gaps between tiles for straight grout lines to provide the best waterproof and visual outcome.
3. Poor Grouting
Poor grouting can occur using the wrong grouting products and additives for a particular application, mixing incorrectly, and applying grout during inclement weather (extreme heat or rain) and poor craftsmanship.
Grout needs to be applied in the right conditions by a qualified tiler or a Grouted grouter to ensure a completely waterproof application.
Poor grouting leads to water seeping into wall cavities or roof spaces, creating structural defects within a residential or commercial property.
4. Silicone Incorrectly or not Applied

It is critical when applying silicone that surfaces are clean and free from grease, water and have enough surface area for the silicone to stick to.

5. Poor drainage
Poor drainage is when water does not fall into the drain hole. This can be due to poor screed / tiling fall or plumbing where the tiles meet the drain.
The primary purpose of tiling is to direct water to a drain to prevent pooling, which can subsequently lead to both leakage and becoming a slip hazard.
Planning is necessary if tiles are to perform as required, with proposed layouts ensuring those involved understand how any tiling decision will subsequently impact drain selection and the grading required over the site.
